Pharaoh Hind

Story

Pharaoh Hind was born in 1865 in Somercotes, Derbyshire, and was the son of a coal miner Pharaoh Hinds snr. (1836-1915) and his wife Frances Parker (1838-1911) who had married in Alfreton, Derbyshire on 26th May 1857.  The family moved to Shirland, Derbyshire, before relocating to Micklefield, where they lived at 4 Bland’s Row.  Pharaoh snr. worked at Peckfield Colliery, Micklefield, and the area he worked near the West Level was known as Pharaoh’s Bord.  By 1881, Pharaoh jnr. was also working at Peckfield Colliery with his father, and in 1890, he married Alice Heslegrave (1868-1947), and they moved to 27 East View.

Pharaoh jnr. was named as a rescuer at the Peckfield Colliery Disaster.

William Appleyard was rescued from the mine.  After suffering with the affects of after-damp poisoning in the West Level, he stated that he dived into Pharaoh’s Bord to catch his breath, and met up with some other survivors including Charles Ball and his son John Charles Ball.

Pharaoh and Alice had 8 children: George (1887-1963); William (1891-1953); Amy (1893-1967); James (1895-1960); Alice (1899-1982); Pharaoh (1900-1976); Thomas Henry (1903-1963); and Mary Agnes (1905-1972).  Their youngest son, Thomas Henry went on to marry Winifred Wallis (1908-1984), who was the granddaughter of John Thomas Wallis, who was killed in the disaster.

Pharaoh passed away in Micklefield on 10th March 1932.
