William Clarke Gregory

Story

William Gregory was born in 1852 in Selston, Nottinghamshire.  He was the son of Enoch Gregory (1821-1866) and Hannah Clarke (1823-1900) who married in Greasley, Nottinghamshire on 21st December 1845.  William was a Coal Miner from a young age, and married Bridget Steele (1854-1937) in 1872.  The couple continued to live and work in Staveley, Nottinghamshire, but by 1891 they moved to 3 East View, Micklefield, and William worked at Peckfield Colliery, along with two brothers-in-law.  George Moakes was married to William’s older sister Fanny Gregory, and John Thomas Wallis was married to William’s younger sister Agnes Ann Gregory.  Both his brothers-in-law were killed in the disaster.  William had a third brother-in-law, William Mills (1853-1935), who was married to his youngest sister Pamela Gregory (1860-1942), and was also a rescuer at the Pit Disaster.  William Gregory was quickly in attendance at the Pit Top, and volunteered for one of the early rescue parties.

After the disaster, William and Bridget moved to 41 Crescent, and William became a Colliery Deputy.  They had eight children, however four died in infancy.  By 1911, the family had moved to 25 Glebe Street, Castleford, but they returned to live in Micklefield, where they are both buried together:
