Wright Wallis

Story

Wright Wallis was born in 1856 in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, and was the son of  William Wallis (1823-1897) and Caroline Chambers (1825-1900), who married 12th July 1846 in Nottingham.  William Wallis was a miner of ironstone, and Caroline was originally from Mansfield, and was a local preacher.  Wright also became a local preacher.  He married Maria Kitts (1858-1933) in Tibshelf, Derbyshire on 25 December 1875, and worked as a coal miner.  He moved to Micklefield in 1880, and lived at 27 Eat View.  His brother John Thomas Wallis also made the move to Micklefield, and was killed in the Peckfield Colliery Disaster.  For a short time around 1890, Wright moved back to Blackwell, but soon returned to work at Peckfield Colliery, and lived at 7 Station Row.

Wright was not at work on the day of the disaster, but volunteered to join one of the early rescue parties.  He passed away in on 4th September 1906, aged 50 and is buried in Micklefield:

His son Samuel James Wallis (1889-1975) married Clara Steel (1890-1948) who was the daughter of Albert Steel (1870-1931) who fortunately survived the Peckfield Colliery Disaster after leaving the pit temporarily to get a pulley.
